Row over Gujarat University awarding work to highest bidder

AHMEDABAD: Voices of protest have erupted over the Gujarat University granting contract of maintaining cleanliness on its GU campus to an agency which quoted the highest price in the tendering process. The logical practice is to award the work to the lowest bidder. The move has fuelled allegations of corruption.

GU sources said that till now the cost of monthly cleanliness of the GU came to Rs 2.50 lakh but as per the new contract, the same job will now cost Rs 7.90 lakh. Six agencies had submitted their bids to the GU. "It is said that this agency was favored as it is run by a person belonging to an organization aligned to the BJP," said a GU source.
It is estimated that 100 cleaners are needed to keep the GU campus neat. Computing their salaries as per the new contract comes to Rs 7,900 per month while the salary of the clerks hired by the GU comes to Rs 5,900. GU registrar H C Sardar could not be contacted for comment while the pro vice-chancellor Dr Mukul Shah refused to comment on this issue.
