South Gujarat University's MBA not among AICTE's approved courses

SURAT: Lokesh Patel, a commerce graduate, wishes to do MBA from Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU). However, G H Bhakta Management Academy (GHBMA) of the university is not among the approved institutes' list on All India Council for Technical Education's (AICTE) website. This made him tense. The list has a number of colleges from across the state, including Surat. However, GHBMA's name is not to be found.

AICTE had introduced a common management admission test (CMAT) for admission to recognised MBA courses across the country. After introduction of a new format for admission, AICTE published a list of authorized colleges and departments on its website for admission to MBA course as per CMAT merit list.
"I am confused on seeking admission in MBA at GHBMA. When I inquired from the university, its officials assured me that the institute is recognized for CMAT," Patel said.

VNSGU sources said GHBMA and university officials had failed to provide complete details about the course and university etc. to AICTE and hence the department's name is missing from the approved institutes' list.

This has created confusion among the minds of students and companies as well, they added.

"We have written to AICTE requesting it to include the name of our department also in the list. We are trying to find out the reason why the name is missing from the approved institutes' list. The university had completed the procedure as per the rules," said R C Khadiya, deputy registrar, VNSGU.

"I will inquire into the matter and necessary steps would be taken to end this confusion. The department is recognized and functions as per AICTE rules," said Dakshesh Thakar, vice- chancellor, VNSGU.

Gujarat University (GU) aims to yield manure from garden waste

Practise what you teach, goes the phrase. And Gujarat University (GU) seems to be in a mood to practise what teachers nowadays have been teaching in classroom - take care of the environment.

Practise what you teach, goes the phrase. And Gujarat University (GU) seems to be in a mood to practise what teachers nowadays have been teaching in classroom - take care of the environment.

GU has launched a project to recycle garden waste to make organic manure, use it for organic farming within the campus and also sell it.

On Earth Day, GU launched ‘Taru Tujne Arpan’ by digging a pit to make organic manure.

As per HoD (chemistry) SK Menon, the university has collected one metric tonne garden waste in a week from the campus to put in the pit.

Menon, who conceptualised the project, said that the work has been outsourced to an agency. “The idea is to come up with organic manure with help of microbes and layers of cow-dung. As the mulch gets ready in 21 days and manure in two months time, we will also initiate the process to use the manure and grow vegetables in the campus in an organic manner,” she said.

GU intends to rope in services of women residing in the campus. As per Menon, wives of class four employees will be trained to make pits, collect waste, put them in the pit in a scientific manner, take out manure and package it.

“We have free space in the campus where we intend to grow vegetables and sell. Till the time we grow vegetables, we aim to sell organic manure and a few garden plants,” she said.

Gujarat University VC has a splash in parched Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: Even as most parts of the state, especially Saurashtra and northern reaches, continue to reel under severe water scarcity, Gujarat University's (GU) vice-chancellor Adesh Pal has decided to ring in this summer in style. The VC is getting a huge swimming pool constructed in his official bungalow and 60% of the work has been completed.

The buildings committee of the GU unanimously passed the pool's construction at the cost of Rs 20 lakh. The pool, measuring 35 feet in length and 15 feet in breadth, will be ready for the VC's use, despite the fact that there is no swimming pool in GU. In fact, Pal will be one of the few government functionaries having a private pool in their residences considering there is no swimming pool in the official bungalows of the CM, mayor, municipal commissioner and even cabinet ministers.

However, cooling off in a luxurious pool makes an apathetic statement, especially when many people in the state are fighting street wars for drinking water. The pool is estimated to use 75,000 litres of water.

This is just another expense incurred by the GU from its development fund for Pal's recreation. Two months back, a tennis court was built at Pal's residence so that he could play tennis with his son. In sharp contrast, the tennis court of the GU lies in shambles.

"Write whatever you want, it makes no difference to me," said Pal when questioned on the pool.

Registrar HS Sardar declined to comment, while officer on special duty (OSD) Arvind Bhandari said it was Pal's personal matter.

Modi to inaugurate Amdavad National Book Fair at Gujarat University

Ahmedabad: The second edition of Amdavad National Book Fair will be inaugurated by CM Narendra Modi at Gujarat University Convention Centre on Tuesday. It will be open to public from May 1 to 7, from 12 noon to 10pm on weekdays and 10am to 10pm on the weekend.

A stall for donation of books and display of movies based on literary works will be the new attractions at the fair. The local, national and international publishers are expected to display thousands of books at 320 stalls at the centre. Literary creations of Kanaiyalal Munshi and Poet Rajendra Shah form theme of the exhibition.

“Many people have old books that are of no use to them. They can be donated here, instead of discarding them. The donated books will reach their target readers,” said Guruprasad Mohapatra, municipal commissioner of the civic body that has set up this stall.

AMC claims that it has received good response from publishers for the second edition of the book fest, so much so that number of stalls has increased from last year’s 175 stalls to 320 stalls this year. AMC has also organised different activities such as poetry recitation, discussions and workshops at the fair.

Gujarat University vice-chancellor has spent over Rs50 lakh in a year for personal work

Gujarat University vice-chancellor has spent over Rs50 lakh in a year for personal work The situation is grim for students residing in the hostels of Gujarat University (GU). Many of them claim that they do not get adequate water for daily chores in the summer. The affected students were agitated when news surfaced about the vice-chancellor’s move to spend Rs20 lakh in building a swimming pool at his official residence.

With his latest move, V-C Dr Adesh Pal has burnt a big hole in GU’s pocket by spending at least Rs50 lakh for personal benefit. He has hired additional security, including 8-10 bouncers, by spending Rs36 lakh in a year!

On Thursday, student-members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) protested outside the V-C’s bungalow. They shouted slogans like “Kulpati ne swimming pool ni maza ane hostel na vidyarthi ne tarasya reva ni saza,” and “Shikhan na name vidyarthio ne lutya, swimming pool banavi kulpati garmi thi chutya.”

Speaking to dna, Dr Pal said that he did follow norms while building the swimming pool. “I followed all the procedures. In the first meeting of the construction committee (on Wednesday), the work of swimming pool was put forward as it was recently formed by the executive council,” he said.

When dna asked him why he did not seek permission of the executive council, he retorted, “I am head of this institution and am not a peon here. There is special power given to me as a head. And why don’t you do a survey. Around 80% of the V-C residences in India have swimming pools,” he claimed. While Dr Pal said that in Gujarat, MSU V-C’s official residence has a swimming pool, officials at MSU denied it.

According to Dr Himanshu Patel, a member of GU’s executive council, the V-C has flouted all norms while constructing the pool. “First, the registrar puts forward the proposal, by issuing advertisement tender is invited; the proposal needs sanction of construction committee, executive council, before the work is commissioned. He has not followed a single procedure. Pal’s swimming pool is an ideal example of illegal construction done for his personal benefit,” he said.
