GU has launched a project to recycle garden waste to make organic manure, use it for organic farming within the campus and also sell it.

On Earth Day, GU launched ‘Taru Tujne Arpan’ by digging a pit to make organic manure.

As per HoD (chemistry) SK Menon, the university has collected one metric tonne garden waste in a week from the campus to put in the pit.

Menon, who conceptualised the project, said that the work has been outsourced to an agency. “The idea is to come up with organic manure with help of microbes and layers of cow-dung. As the mulch gets ready in 21 days and manure in two months time, we will also initiate the process to use the manure and grow vegetables in the campus in an organic manner,” she said.

GU intends to rope in services of women residing in the campus. As per Menon, wives of class four employees will be trained to make pits, collect waste, put them in the pit in a scientific manner, take out manure and package it.

“We have free space in the campus where we intend to grow vegetables and sell. Till the time we grow vegetables, we aim to sell organic manure and a few garden plants,” she said.
