SURAT : For the first time , the annual general meeting of the Senate , the top decision-making body Veer Narmad South Gujarat University ( VNSGU ) was held here under surveillance with CCTV cameras on March 25 .
The university on Thursday installed two closed circuit cameras in the Senate floor . Eighteen more would be installed in the administration building , including the offices of the deputy registrar .
The administrative block had four cameras CCTV .
University officials said the cameras were being installed for security reasons .
However, university sources said this was being done to mount pressure on specific members of the Senate, who are in the habit of making strong statements .
" The BJP affiliated to the university people are installing cameras to spy . No problem if the Senate meeting held under camera surveillance , but in this case the goal is to spy on her assistants . Authorities university must have installed cameras to check the incidents of sexual harassment on campus , "said Bhavesh Rabari member of the Senate , who is incharge of the National Students Union of India ( NSUI ) in southern Gujarat.
"I had demanded a CCTV surveillance. Should be done for all important meetings. I had demanded video and audio recording of the union and of the meetings of the Academic Council , but university officials had not done before," said the union and the member Senate Gaurang Vaidya .
" It is good for important meetings are being kept under surveillance with CCTV cameras. This would help improve transparency. Meeting not only the Senate , all the important meetings were held under CCTV surveillance camera , " said the member of the Senate Sanjay Desai .
" CCTV cameras will help us to reveal the truth. This will help us discover the wrongdoings in college ," said union member Amit Sindha .
"The cameras are being installed on the Senate floor to create psychological pressure on members . Still have not finalized whether to install cameras or not the meeting of the union," said JR Mehta , secretary , VNSGU .
"We have cameras installed for security reasons . Corridor not only the Senate, all the important places in the administrative block are being put under surveillance ," Deputy Foreign Minister VNSGU Dakshesh Thakar said.
